A short drive takes you to the quiet inland village of Ano Mera is home to the restored 16th-century monastery Panagia Tourliani. Ano Mera has a few shops, bakery and a pretty town square with tavernas around.
Mykonos Town is one of the best examples of Cycladic architecture with an enchanting warren of narrow marble lanes, bedecked with bougainvillaea in purple bloom and lined with picturesque churches, charming restaurants, quirky art galleries and chic boutiques. You should definitely pay a visit to the Church of Panayia Paraportiani. There are interesting museums including the Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum and the Aegean Maritime Museum. Mykonos Town is a shopper's paradise with casual fashion, souvenirs and jewellery being sold in Little Venice, Greek designers on Matogliani, brand-named stores on Mayoyanni Street and fantastic art on Mavrogenous Street. The open-air cinema is another delight of Mykonos Town or Hora as it is otherwise known.
Other popular beaches are Elia Beach, Psarou Beach, Paraga Beach, Paradise Beach and Agios Ioannis Beach. There are twenty-five beaches on this beautiful island. As well as Kalafatis Beach, Platys Gialos is particularly good for water sports. Elia Beach is gorgeous with silvery white sand and part of Mykonos’ longest sweep of sand, popular with families. The rainbow flag at the end of the beach marks this as an LGBT-friendly stretch of sand. You can catch water taxis between Elia Beach, Platys Gailos and other beaches.
